Midleton Hurling and Football, Ladies Football and Camogie Club Notes - June 20

20 June, 2024

JUVENILES

FÉILE NA GAEL 2024

Our Fé15s travel to Wexford this Saturday to represent Cork in the 2024 National Féile na Gael finals.

Huge preparation has been put in by the players and management and we wish them the very best of luck.

They warmed up on Monday night with a league win over Sarsfields in a very good game in Clonmult Memorial Park.

A big thank you to Pat Walsh Paints for sponsoring the gear for the panel for Saturday.

Below are the pictures and the schedule for Saturday. Please support the lads if you can at all...Up The Magpies!

FÉ12S

Our MID2s Hurlers travelled to Douglas on Sunday evening to take on Douglas 2 in phase 2 of the U-12 Hurling League.

Our lads were unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a 5-4 to 3-8 Scoreline. This was our first loss of the year for the MID2 lads in Hurling, we will keep the heads up!!

Our MID1s Hurlers also travelled to Douglas on Monday evening to take on Douglas 1 also in phase 2 of the U12 Hurling League.

In a end to end game from Start to finish the lads came away with a draw of 6-3 to 5-6 Scoreline.

Well done to all 17 players who put in a good performance on the night.

FÉ13S

The Midleton Fé13 team that were victorious over Watergrasshill on Monday evening at Park South on a scoreline of Midleton 5-7 to Watergrasshill 0-4. Superb battling from our lads and their efforts in training each week are starting to pay dividends. Well done one and all.

What a weekend it was for Fé13 player Michael McManus who won gold in Munster 75m hurdles last Saturday in Waterford and then, to top off a great few days, Michael captained Midleton to victory over Watergrasshill at Park South on Monday night. Top Man Michael.

FÉ14S

A busy and successful weekend for the Fé14s with two semi-finals to contend.

First up was the P1 Hurling championship semi-final on Friday against Ballincollig.

In superb conditions in Catharlag, Midleton got off to a fantastic start with tw converted frees and a goal within the first five minutes and sustaining the pressure through the first-half to have us ahead 2-7 to 0-7 at the half-time whistle.

Ballincollig came out fighting in the second-half and scored seven unanswered points putting them a point ahead. A converted free got the Magpies scoring again and a goal followed by a quick point was enough to get a well-deserved win. Tomas O'Shea was captain on the night.

Final score: Midleton 3-9 Ballincollig 0-15

Next up... P1 County final v Ballinora. Details: TBC.

Sunday saw a home tie in glorious sunshine in Clonmult Memorial Park versus St Michaels in the Eastern division 1 Football Championship semi-final.

A close first-half saw the game tied 1-5 to 1-5 at the whistle. It continued to be a close game right up to 10 minutes to go when Midleton got a second wind and found the net. Captain on the night was Cathal Power.

Final score: Midleton 5-11 St Michaels 2-8

Next up... East Div. 1 County final v Cobh

FÉ7S

Well done to our U-7s who played superbly in a football blitz in Castlemartyr on Sunday morning. Great stuff boys and keep up the good work.

CAMOGIE

UNDER 12S

Our U12 (White team) played their second game in Phase 2 of the U12 League at home in Clonmult Memorial Park against Buttevant on Friday evening last. It was a great game from start to finish as both teams were evenly matched and the ball was moved up and down the field continuously with both teams displaying all their improving skills - particularly getting themselves out of tight situations by taking their allowed steps and then hand passing or striking to move the sliothar forward. Even though the game finished as a draw, it was a great result for both teams who battled hard throughout.

Our U12 (black team) travelled to the city last Saturday morning to play their final game in round  against St. Finbarr’s. A blustery morning made scoring difficult in the first half however with determination and skill the girls secured the win in the end. Great teamwork from the girls once again and well done to all.

UNDER 15

Our U15s played a challenge match last Saturday morning against Dungourney. Despite reduced numbers from the opposing team we had a good opportunity to put our training into practice, coming away with the win. Thanks to Saoirse, Millie and Anna from the U14s who played up. Well done to Molly (pictured below) who was captain on the day.

Our U15s are through to a league semi-final in the U16B category next Saturday morning at home against Sars. Best of luck to the girls.

WELL DONE SAOIRSE

Huge congratulations to Saoirse Murphy Lane who was part of the U-13 Cork team that took part in a blitz in Limerick over the weekend. Cork won their first two matches against Clare and Waterford which got them to the semi final against Tipperary!unfortunately though Tipp came out on top.

CONDOLENCES

Everyone at Midleton GAA Club would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Hennessy family and the many friends of the late John 'The Chief' Hennessy, who died this week.

The always dapper John was a great Midleton GAA man and will be sorely missed. He was a former secretary of our club as well as being Chairman and President of the East Cork Board in his time.

He was one of the main drivers of the building of the Tom Powell Pavilion in our club in the mid 1970s. He also served as a selector with many Midleton teams over the years, including the seniors in the late 70s. He also served as a Cork minor selector.

John was the main club organiser for fixtures/field maintenance and he always looked after the lining of the field in Clonmult Memorial Park himself while he delegated other jobs to fellow officers....hence why he was called 'The Chief.'

In his playing days he played with distinction with Midleton CBS and was selected to play for a Munster schools selection which was a very rare thing for a Midleton CBS player in that era. He also won a County Intermediate medal with Midleton in 1962.

In later years he was a great supporter of Midleton teams and was a regular in our club grounds and clubhouse and in recent years was a regular attendee at our Monday Club. His family too of course have given wonderful service to our club in many guises....driven on by 'The Chief.'

Thanks to everyone who took part in our Guards of Honour.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
